Mother of OFW Who Died in UAE Floods Suspects Foul Play in Daughter’s Death
MANILA — The family of overseas Filipino worker (OFW) Marjorie Saquing Ancheta mourns her recent demise in the widespread floods in the United Arab Emirates.
According to Marjorie’s mother, she was still communicating with her daughter, who was supposed to come home from her school in Dubai.
She even sent videos of their vehicle getting stuck in the floodwaters. “I even told her that if it’s raining heavily there, she shouldn’t come home, she should just stay at school. But they said there’s nothing to eat there, so they decided to come home,” said Maricris Ancheta, Marjorie’s mother.
However, Marjorie’s family doubts the circumstances surrounding her death.
“Of course, it’s painful because she had three children. And she was a single mother. We doubt why she died. It seems like they neglected my daughter there,” her mother added.
STRANDED IN FLOODWATERS
According to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) report, Marjorie struggled to breathe along with another Filipina when their shuttle bus got stranded in the floodwaters.
The family of Marjorie’s companion, Jennie Gamboa, shares the same sentiments.
“Her sisters are saying they doubt because they don’t know why their companions in the vehicle were fine. Why did she die?” said Mayor Diman Datu of Bacolor, Pampanga.
The Department of Migrant Workers has already reached out to the families of the deceased.
This includes another Filipino who fell into a sinkhole when the flood occurred.
“This is also the instruction of our president to provide full support and assistance to the families, especially in terms of repatriating the remains. We are also waiting for the report from UAE authorities regarding the official investigation,” said DMW Officer-in-Charge Hans Leo Cacdac.
DMW is also monitoring the two OFWs who were injured while providing assistance to other affected Filipinos.
“There are still areas where the water hasn’t receded. Since the drainage systems were overwhelmed, they are sending trucks to pump water from these areas,” said Philippine Consul General in Dubai Marford Angeles.
The families are hopeful that the remains of the three OFWs will be repatriated to the Philippines soon.
